William Whyte

William Whyte was American urbanist, organizational analyst, and journalist who wrote extensively on cities and their organization.

  • Fortune Magazine sponsored Whyte to interview the CEOs of corporations including General Electric and Ford in 1956 for his bestselling book The Organization Man
  • Served on the New York City Planning Commission in 1969 and began to document direct observation to describe behavior in an urban environment which evolved into the “Street Life Project, “ an ongoing study of pedestrian behavior
  • Worked with Project for Public Spaces worked closely on the renovation of Bryant Park in New York City
  • Graduated from St. Andrew’s School in Middletown, Delaware and from Princeton University in 1939 before serving in the Marine Corps between 1941-45

William Whyte passed away on January 12, 1999.
